Explore Fiber is a collaborative website showcasing and exploring fiber as a fine art material.
Greetings, fiber lovers! I’m out and about, attending the Contemporary Handweavers of Texas biannual conference, “Crossing Threads Connecting Cultures” at the Sugar Land Marriot Town Square in Sugarland, Texas. I’ll be highlighting various activities, workshops and happenings from the conference, but wanted to start with the opening tonight of the Textiles of the World Pop-Up exhibit at the Sugarland Art Center and Gallery. Here is a little taste of the wonderful textiles in this exhibit…
On loan from the private collections of Contemporary Handweavers of Houston members. Cloth connects all of us through its commonality. All of humanity uses cloth from birth to death, and civilization would not exist without it. Textiles are highly collectible by worldtravelers. Weavers, in particular, go out of their way to seek out and meet the artisans, learn about the techniques used in different cultures, and build collections from their travels. Many CHH members have traveled widely and amassed lovely textile collections representing many cultural traditions. Textiles of the World comes together from the collections of CHH members. Enjoy the artistry and the stories told through the threads.
