Explore Fiber is a collaborative website showcasing and exploring fiber as a fine art material.
The Fall 2014 issued of the Surface Design Association’s journal has an article in their Emerging Voices that features Caleb Sayan. He has been working with his mother, Andrea Aranow, to catalogue and digitize her textile collection that includes over 40,000 pieces. Textile Hive is a membership-supported service that caters to professional and educational organizations.
Located in Portland, Oregon, Textile Hive’s archive has objects from over 50 countries that range from over 50 countries. Her collection includes woven, embroidered, crocheted, braided, dyed and printed techniques. Hear Andrea talk about a fragment of her collecting adventure:
From the website:
“This project demonstrates the bright future for the Andrea Aranow Textile Design Collection as an empowering platform and cultural material both in person and online. Throughout the project we strived to seamlessly combine the physical, digital, and contextual aspects of the collection. The potential for this unique digitized archive to be used and expanded upon in an educational setting is massive, creating exciting new possibilities for learning and exploration for future generations.”

This is an amazing resource, but also very exciting to use digital technology to make the collection to anyone around the world.
