Explore Fiber is a collaborative website showcasing and exploring fiber as a fine art material.
I just returned from attending the Surface Design Association’s 40th anniversary conference in Portland, Oregon. This organization has impacted my life in a huge way, and I hope you will consider joining this national/international fiber community.
I received an SDA Scholar art educator scholarship in 2011 to attend their conference in Minneapolis, “Confluence”. The Surface Design Association’s intention for the scholarships was to inspire SDA scholars to incorporate fiber arts instruction into their art education curriculum. That conference planted the seed that would become Explore Fiber. Attending the SDA conference this past weekend brought this experience full circle, as I gave a Pecha Kucha style presentation (embedded below) to the conference attendees, showing how that scholarship opportunity bloomed into a web-based platform that promotes fibers as a fine art material to art educators and fiber enthusiasts.
The conference was a wonderful experience! It was so exciting to meet new friends who share a passion for fibers and fiber art! I will make the next few blog posts about the Keynote speakers, the artist workshop presenters, and the fiber events over the 4 day conference. Fibers are one of the most important art materials in the 21st century. If you have a passion for fiber, please consider joining this inspiring organization today!
