Explore Fiber is a collaborative website showcasing and exploring fiber as a fine art material.
There is nothing quite like felted fabric. Soft and strong, the binding of the fibers together to create felt is a sensual, magical process. Sandrine Bihorel is a french artist who creates felt, a non-woven fabric, using techniques that were discovered in ancient times. One of the first types of fabrics made by man, felt has been utilized for clothing, household objects and even dwellings like yurts that nomadic tribes made. As she states on her website:
The textile is a unique metaphorical material for me. My works, as well as mythical fabrics, demand a statute of textual object because they carry the print of my hand, of my entire body implied in the process of the felting of fibres, of my memory too.
