Artist Statement: As an art educator who teaches sculpture, my interest in transforming limp fibers into sculptural forms intrigues me. This work is from a new series that is combining investigations into shaping fibers into form and a new interest in dyeing fibers and creating felt. Embellishing my work with beads has been a love I’ve had for many years. The third form in this series, Soft Place reflects a place that on the outside is strong and firm, creating a place where one can feel safe. The interior of the sculpture is lined with another layer of hand made felt, with a padded “pillow” of felt at the bottom of the vessel providing a soft place to land. The movement of the felt around the edge of the sculpture suggests winds of change. These times are fraught with change which results in all of us hoping for a soft place to land and rest.
Techniques and media used: hand crochet cotton, hardening agent, painted surfaces, hand felted wool dyed in two resist dye baths, and bead embellishment.
At its widest points, the sculpture is 13″h (when felt is fully extended) x 7.5″w x 7″d
