Artist Statement: As an art educator who teaches sculpture, my interest in transforming limp fibers into sculptural forms intrigues me. This piece is inspired by the finger traps we used to play with when we were children juxtaposed with banding of evil eye beads on each end. (From Wikipedia: The evil eye is a curse believed to be cast by a malevolent glare, usually given to a person when they are unaware. Many cultures believe that receiving the evil eye will cause misfortune or injury. Talismans created to protect against the evil eye are also frequently called “evil eyes“.) The sculpture is woven utilizing basketry techniques out of approximately 15 yards of 3/8″ wide handwoven metal fabric. The black wire warp is contrasted by a bright blue, metallic yarn. Each end of the sculpture is banded with a circle of 8 evil eye beads.
Techniques and media used: hand woven strips with a metal wire warp on an 8 harness floor loom, basketry techniques, and bead embellishment.
