Explore Fiber is a collaborative website showcasing and exploring fiber as a fine art material.
I’m Christine Miller, one of the founders of Explore Fiber, a retired high school Visual Arts Teacher and a life long fiber artist. Fiber has been my passion from childhood and the thread of that interest has created a wonderful life long journey. I’ve had yarn in my fingers since the age of 8. This early passion took me on many paths and led to a professional fiber art career in the early 1980s.
I started weaving in 1973, but things changed in the 80’s when I discovered weaving with wire, thanks to a workshop led by Donna Kaplan. My work changed dramatically after that workshop – woven metal cloth can be shaped and manipulated to create three dimensional sculptural work. This new medium is extremely engaging and I have used it to create jewelry, basketry and sculptural art. I give programs and workshops to weaving guilds and fiber groups. I have sold my work through many venues – galleries, my own retail gallery (Fiber Options)in the mid-90s, and through a later business I started, Studio Textile Resources later in that decade. Some of my latest work includes casting my woven metal into bronze – a direction I am extremely excited about!
I embarked on a formal teaching career in 2002 and received a degree in Arts Education in 2005 from the University of North Texas and am a retired visual arts educator. One of my missions is to bring more fibers into K-12 art curriculum; the Explore Fiber Labs will support other art educators in adding fibers into their art curriculum. Each Lab is an instruction about a material, process or technique. They are designed to give participants hands on training to broaden their fiber arts experiences.
As many artists, teaching is a vital part of my life and keeps me inspired and on my toes. I have years of experience in many areas of fiber art and I invite you to contact me…
Personal work includes the following processes and techniques:
Professional Development workshops and consulting are available for visual art educators. Contact to discuss topics and length of trainings.
Weaving Workshops are available to guilds and interested weavers.
