Explore Fiber is a collaborative website showcasing and exploring fiber as a fine art material.
My name is Laura and i am a weaver from Florence, Italy. After 25 years as an architect, a few years ago I met the Sardinian frame, and I fell in love with it. Led by my strong passion for crafts, I started attending some textile workshops and I learned, step by step, to move the heddles and slide the quill, trying to understand the relationship between the weft and warp and the potential of knowing how to create a handmade fabric. Over the years I have gone through various experimentation paths, but always with the aim of developing a style that would use the richest textile tradition to create contemporary garments. Starting from the use of traditional weaving techniques on a 4 heddle loom, I was inspired by the regular lines of the Japanese tradition, bringing Europe closer to the East, combining tradition with modernity, comfort and wearability.
Handmade weaving is an art for me, and like any form of art it needs study, research, but also creativity and passion. It is on these assumptions that my weaving work is based. Through the use of natural materials I make clothing and accessories, but also furnishing accessories and objects for the home. I do everything with my hands: every single product is made with extreme care. This is why production is not large, but respects the time of handicraft work, which is also a time of meditation and calm. Although I work independently, I am always interested in external collaborations, and I greatly appreciate the exchange of ideas and skills. These are the occasions that make my work even more precious and the only product I realize is unique.
I am a teacher too and i love teaching weaving in all its expressions. You can find out more about me at my website.
