Sometimes in my art classroom I use the word “juicy” to describe a certain quality of art to my students. What does that mean? Well, the word visceral comes to mind – a visual image that is so powerful it has a physical quality. Also juicy describes something I find delicious. I can spend lots of time “consuming” the artwork; treasuring every little bite. The embroidery of french artist Julie Sarloutte is definitely VERY juicy! I am reminded of the impasto paintings of Van Gogh when I look at Julie’s embroidery. There is a roughness to it that allows the viewer to see the hand of the stitcher – to feel the movement and power of the emotion behind her stitching.
