Explore Fiber is a collaborative website showcasing and exploring fiber as a fine art material.
One of my art educator colleagues, Jenny Mathys, is a contributor to the Explore Fiber community, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw this photo she posted to her Instagram. I asked her if I could share the story behind this labor of love, and she consented:
I was gathering these guys to send to Austin with my sister and brother to hide. It was right after the night club shootings that happened in Florida, and people were posting hearts all over Instagram. As I saw my community of octopuses sitting there, I decided to make a rainbow heart as a way to send love out into the world, in the only small way that I knew how. This is my tiny contribution to the world. It may not seem like much, but as I tell my kids, it’s what I can do now, with what I have.
And we never know how much each thing we de can trickle out into the world. It never matters how young or old people are, what language they speak, or the color of their skin, they all light up when this little octopus is given to them! I have given them joy and a small piece of my heart!
What small thing can you do to spread joy and love? There is no effort too small…..
